Whenever I hear a Black Woman call herself a “strong Black woman” I roll my eyes and automatically think mule. You know the animal that works hard and carries everyone’s load. Little does that Black woman who has called herself a “strong Black woman” know that that thinking  is deeply rooted in racism. You see, in order to justify the rape of Black women Black women had to be dehumanized. Did you know that one of the old slavery myths was that Black women did not feel pain? Yes, they thought we didn’t feel pain and that notion is still prevalent in society today.

“RIO DE JANEIRO, Nov 14 2012 (IPS) – If a black woman and a white woman both need emergency obstetric care, a Brazilian doctor will assist the white woman because of the stereotype that black women are better at handling pain and are used to giving birth.

  1. I also propose we lose the constant attitude as a defense mechanism.Maybe we just want to say hello and nothing more, quit giving us the screw face for making eye contact..

    • Dear Sir-
Please understand that I mean this with all due rrespect. I’m wondering, if by “screw face,” you mean the author’s ‘eye rolling,” the “beset” look that so many black women wear, myself included — it’s a protective mechanism, or the look of disdain so many black men give black women (because they’re not white women) when we simply try to nod or smile a simple polite greeting of “Hello.”

Me West Indian mum taught me, from childhood, that “when your eyes make four,” the only civilized and polite thing to do is say “Hello!” I know that I, for one, am tired of black men acting like my simple smile, or “hello” was a marriage proposal, or a wanton sexual proposal — especially since I am a woman who loves women (something me West Indian mum decidely did NOT teach me). In fact, when she sees me now, it is SHE who gives ME de “screw face” and does not speak, just as your response evoked de screw face from me. So, please, I respectfully request further clarification regarding your response to this “Mule” post.

      Thanking you in advance,
      –Vivien
